Climate variations influenced the agricultural productivity, health risk, and conflict level of preindustrial societies. Discrimination between environmental and anthropogenic impacts on past civilizations, however, remains difficult because of the paucity of high-resolution paleoclimatic evidence. We present tree ring-based reconstructions of central European summer precipitation and temperature variability over the past 2500 years. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is susceptible to many pathogens which cause significant losses to viticulture worldwide. Chemical control is available, but agro-ecological concerns have raised interest in alternative methods, especially in triggering plant immunity by elicitor treatments. The β-glucan laminarin (Lam) and its sulfated derivative (PS3) have been previously demonstrated to induce resistance in grapevine against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). Abstract Rural development related to agriculture can roughly be divided into two trajectories: 1) agri-industrial development or modernisation, and 2) multifunctional or even post-productivist rural development. The role of these trajectories varies in different rural settings, with different emphases on agricultural production and its conduct. At the farm level, the trajectories evolve from existing farming practices and their connections, which enable or disable different kinds of development. Latvijas Universitātes akadēmiķim, profesoram Visvaldim Varnešam Klīvem (1935–2003) izveidota virtuālā izstāde “Vieglus darbus neatmaksājas darīt: V. V. Klīvem – 85”, kurā atspoguļots ne tikai profesora dzīves gājums, bet LU Bibliotēkas krājumā esošā profesora Klīves grāmatu kolekcija. Izstādes sagatavošanas laikā izveidojās cieša un draudzīga sadarbība ar profesora sievu Viju Klīvi. Sarunās ar Klīves kundzi atklājās, ka nozīmīgs viņu dzīves periods kopā aizvadīts arī Indijā. Intervija atspoguļo spilgtus momentus, kas skar prof. V. V. Klīves un Vijas Klīves misijas darbu Indijā: personīgos iespaidus par šīs valsts klimatu, ļaudīm un kultūru.
Assessing drought vulnerability and adaptation among farmers in Gadaref region, Eastern Sudan

Agricultural productivity in rural areas is severely affected by climate variability, and this elevates the vulnerability of rural households to food insecurity. This study examines the socio-economic vulnerability of farmers who are susceptible to droughts in the five agricultural-based regions of Gadaref, Eastern Sudan. A survey was carried out in 500 households to collect data on socio-economic and livelihood indicators. The data analyzed from these indicators were used to generate the three components of drought vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. The Green Deal and the CAP: policy implications to adapt farming practices and to preserve the EU's natural resources

The June 2018 CAP proposals are only marginally consistent with the ambitions of the Green Deal. This is also the case of the regulation revisions being adopted by either the Council or the European Parliament in October 2020. Making EU agriculture consistent with the Green Deal but would require a whole food chain policy that encompasses more stringent instruments on the supply side and extensive changes in eating patterns.
